BODY WORLDS. The Rhythm of Life. Madrid

The exhibition

BODY WORLDS: THE RHYTHM OF LIFE is a convergence of aesthetic anatomy, findings in health and wellness, immersive multimedia, and narrative storytelling. It shows the possibility of living mindfully, with meaning and vitality, by refracting the story of life and self-actualization, through the donors, who have committed to educating future generations.

BODY WORLDS: THE RHYTHM OF LIFE presents the science and splendor of the human body, and deconstructs its form and function through the science of Plastination invented by anatomist, Dr. Gunther von Hagens. The exhibition shows the body in health and distress, its vulnerabilities and potential, and many of the challenges the human body faces as it navigates the 21st Century.

A large collection of plastinated specimens including fascinating whole body plastinates, body configurations, translucent slices, organs, as well as interactive elements, 3D displays, and other multimedia are curated and presented in galleries that feature the various systems of the body.

The locomotive, nervous, respiratory, circulatory, cardiovascular, digestive, and reproductive systems are presented in ways previously familiar only to medical practitioners.

The biology and anatomy of the human body, and the continuum of life, are elucidated through anatomical dissections, scenes, and compositions and health lessons. Visitors are taken on an epic journey of discovery through the human body.

The exhibition addresses the mind-body connection and stress related maladies and diseases, and offers the latest preventive lifestyle information for common disorders and diseases.

“BODY WORLDS: THE RHYTHM OF LIFE asks visitors to consider the frenetic pace of modern living and its effect on the body and mind, and proposes that living with pulsating vitality can be achieved by embracing healthy lifestyles and living to optimal tempo, neither too fast nor too slow, but to the beat of their own life,” says curator Dr Angelina Whalley.

“The exhibition shows the body in health and distress, its vulnerabilities and potential, and many of the challenges the human body faces as it navigates the 21st Century. ”

Plastination was invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977 at the University of Heidelberg, Germany and has continuously been developed it since then.

Plastination is a technique that stops the decomposition of the dead body and produces solid, odorless and durable anatomical specimens for scientific and medical training.

The production of a human whole body plastinate requires approximately 1,500 working hours.
